Common Causes of Back Pain

 

When someone feels pain in their back, there are several common causes. Some of the most common reasons why people feel pain in their back include:

 

Paraspinal Muscle Tightness: Some muscles run along the sides of the vertebrae. Sometimes, these muscles can become tight and knot, often due to overuse and poor posture. A trained chiropractor can help address paraspinal muscle pain and tenderness.

 

Bulging or Herniated Disc: Some small discs provide a cushion for the vertebrae in the back. If these discs herniate, the interior can leak out over the nerves in the spine. This can lead to severe pain.

 

Muscle Imbalance: Muscle imbalance is another common cause of back pain. The muscles in the back need to be balanced. If they aren't balanced, one set of muscles may end up working harder than the other, leading to pain.

Chiropractors use chiropractic adjustments as one of the many tools to help to normalize the performance of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Chiropractic adjustments are simply inputting a force into a joint in order to help restore normal motion of that joint.

 

 


The idea that the spine was acutely connected to health is nothing new. In fact, the ancient Greeks and other early civilizations used spinal adjustments as a form of healthcare. Hippocrates, the Father of Western Medicine, stated that “physical structure is the basis of medicine” and went into great detail concerning the importance of the spine to good health. Hippocrates is quoted as saying: “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.”

Heat and cold – experts may alternate ice and heat therapy to help patients treat back pain. Ice packs may be used to numb the lower back for ten to fifteen minutes and then switched to a heating pad, hot water bottle, or heat wrap to restore blood flow to the area and promote healing.
